Coding Clinic Starts Its Transition to ICD-10-CM/PCS

June 7, 2013:

Brigid T. Caffrey, BA, BS, CCS, Clinical/Technical Editor

With the ICD-10-CM/PCS compliance date of October 1, 2014, fast approaching, the American Hospital Association’s AHA Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM has begun its transition to the new code set.

Beginning with the fourth quarter of 2012, Coding Clinic began addressing coding issues for ICD-10-CM/PCS in “Ask the Editor.” It is important to note that December 31, 2013, will be the last date Coding Clinic will accept ICD-9-CM coding questions. Questions selected will be answered in the first quarter 2014 release, which will be the last edition including ICD-9-CM. The publication will solely address ICD-10-CM/PCS coding issues beginning with second quarter 2014.

Past coding advice in AHA’s Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM will not be converted to the new coding system for the ICD-10-CM/PCS coder. The library of information will begin anew with the inception of the new coding system.

Also note that AHA has upgraded the submission process for its greatly appreciated online question and answer utility (www.CodingClinicAdvisor.com). This forum accepts ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM/PCS, and HCPCS coding questions. See the website for how to register and the instructions and rules for submitting questions.

Keep in mind that the AHA’s Coding Clinic is considered an official source for coding advice and is approved by the four cooperating parties of the AHA, American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).

For ICD-10-CM, the hierarchy of official coding guidelines and instructions is as follows:

  1. ICD-10-CM alphabetic index and tabular list
  2. Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
  3. AHA Coding Clinic advice
